Manchester Day 2025
July 31, 2025Overview
In October 2025, Specular Sounds delivered full front-of-house and monitor engineering for a sold-out performance by Jane Weaver, supported by Dull (a two-piece post-punk act) and Dean McPhee (solo instrumentalist), as part of The Lovely Eggs’ Secret Weekender festival at Lancaster Castle.
The show took place inside the Castle’s historic Keep, a beautiful but acoustically challenging stone chamber with reflective surfaces and no acoustic treatment.
Role & Responsibilities
Taylor Maudsley as lead Front of House (FOH) Sound Engineer, was responsible for the complete live mix, system integration, and overall sound experience for the audience. Business partner Andrew Baller handled monitor engineering and stage management, ensuring each performer received clear and balanced stage sound.
Technical Setup
We mixed the show using a Behringer X32 Compact digital console, chosen for its flexibility and reliability in a portable format.
Our trusted collaborator Blue Noise Event Production Ltd, represented by our good friend Josh, supplied an L-Acoustics PA system, which we integrated seamlessly with our Specular Sounds FOH & Floor Monitor package.
Given the Keep’s reflective stone surfaces, the focus was on precise EQ control and strategic speaker placement to minimise reflections and achieve clarity in the vocal and midrange frequencies without excessive low-end buildup.

Challenges
The biggest challenge was the untreated acoustic environment. The stone interior caused strong reverberation and standing waves that could easily muddy the mix. We spent time carefully tuning the system during soundcheck, using both room analysis and real-time adjustment to balance the natural reverb while maintaining the energy of the performances.
Outcome
Despite the acoustic hurdles, the night was a great success. Both the audience and the artists praised the sound quality and overall experience. Each act — from Dean McPhee’s ambient solo guitar layers to Dull’s driving post-punk energy and Jane Weaver’s dynamic full-band performance — translated beautifully in the space.
This project demonstrated Specular Sounds’ adaptability and technical precision in handling unconventional venues while maintaining high-quality live sound delivery.
